Việc Apple sử dụng tên gọi iPhone Duo khiến nhiều người gợi nhớ đến Surface Duo, chiếc smartphone màn hình kép không thành công của Microsoft. Dù vậy, cái tên iPhone Duo không phải là một lựa chọn tồi, thậm chí khá phù hợp với xu hướng đặt tên sản phẩm của Apple trong suốt một thập kỷ qua. Công ty này thường sử dụng các từ ba chữ cái để phân biệt các sản phẩm, như "Pro", "Max", "Air" và gần đây nhất là "Neo". Do đó, "Duo" có thể là bước tiến tiếp theo trong sở thích này.
