Trước đó, lúc 6 giờ 30 phút cùng ngày, lực lượng chức năng nhận được thông tin về việc ông Phan Văn Hùng (65 tuổi, trú tại thôn Hà Lợi Trung, xã Bến Hải) sử dụng ghe đi đánh cá tại khu vực biển của thôn thì bị sóng đánh chìm cách bờ 100 m.
Sự cố khiến ông Hùng mất tích; riêng chiếc ghe bị chìm đã được tìm thấy và lực lượng biên phòng, người dân địa phương phối hợp kéo lên bờ.
Cơ quan chức năng đã thông báo với gia đình ông Hùng; đồng thời, cử các lực lượng, huy động thêm phương tiện để tổ chức tìm kiếm ngư dân mất tích.
