Theo Đội Quy tập hài cốt liệt sĩ thuộc Bộ Tư lệnh TP.HCM, ngày 4.9, các lực lượng tiếp tục tìm kiếm, quy tập hài cốt liệt sĩ tại vị trí thứ hai thuộc khu B, công viên Lê Thị Riêng.
Trong ngày, lực lượng làm nhiệm vụ xử lý hơn 450 m³ đất, tiếp tục mở rộng phạm vi tìm kiếm tại khu vực này.
Bộ Tư lệnh TP.HCM huy động 3 máy cuốc, một xe ben và 2 xe tải phục vụ công tác đào, vận chuyển đất, bảo đảm tiến độ thực hiện nhiệm vụ.
Qua đào tìm, lực lượng chức năng phát hiện, quy tập thêm 7 hài cốt liệt sĩ và 5 bộ di vật tại khu B.
Lũy kế từ ngày 23.6 đến hết ngày 4.9, các lực lượng đã phát hiện, quy tập 571 hài cốt liệt sĩ tại công viên Lê Thị Riêng, trong đó 268 hài cốt có di vật.

Trong tổng số hài cốt đã được quy tập, có 538 hài cốt được phát hiện tại các mộ riêng lẻ; 33 hài cốt được quy tập tại 8 vị trí mộ tập thể. Trong đó, khu A có 2 vị trí mộ tập thể, khu B có 6 vị trí.
Việc xác định vị trí đào tìm được thực hiện trên cơ sở tổng hợp lời kể của nhân chứng lịch sử, tài liệu lưu trữ, bản đồ, ảnh tư liệu, dấu vết thực địa cùng kết quả khảo sát radar xuyên đất và đo ảnh điện.

Do địa hình công viên Lê Thị Riêng đã thay đổi qua nhiều lần cải tạo, một số khu vực có lớp đất đắp dày. Máy móc được sử dụng để bóc dỡ, san gạt và vận chuyển lớp đất phía trên. Khi phát hiện dấu hiệu liên quan đến hài cốt hoặc di vật, phương tiện cơ giới được dừng lại để cán bộ, chiến sĩ chuyển sang đào thủ công, sàng lọc đất và bóc tách thận trọng.
Mỗi vị trí phát hiện hài cốt, di vật đều được ghi nhận, chụp ảnh, phân loại, mã hóa và bảo quản riêng. Những mẫu xương, răng đủ điều kiện được lấy, niêm phong và bảo quản để phục vụ giám định ADN, đối chiếu với mẫu của thân nhân và hồ sơ liên quan.
