Thông tin từ UBND xã Quảng Bình cho biết, khoảng hơn 8 giờ 20 ngày 9.9, trên tỉnh lộ 511 đoạn qua thôn Hiền Tây (xã Quảng Bình) xảy ra vụ việc người dân chặt cây bên đường, khi cây đổ đã đè trúng 1 người đi xe máy khiến nạn nhân tử vong tại chỗ.

Thời điểm trên, anh Nguyễn Quang Thọ (43 tuổi, ngụ thôn Hiền Tây) dùng cưa máy chặt cây xà cừ lớn bên tỉnh lộ 511 (vị trí cây nằm trước nhà số 295). Thời điểm cây đổ xuống đường thì ông L.Đ.T (68 tuổi, ngụ thôn Mậu Xương, xã Quảng Bình) điều khiển xe máy đi qua, và bị cây đè trúng người, khiến nạn nhân tử vong tại chỗ.
Hình ảnh từ camera trên xe ô tô của một người dân ghi lại, cho thấy thời điểm trước khi cây đổ có một người đàn ông đứng ra lòng đường dùng tay ra hiệu, cảnh báo các phương tiện dừng lại vì cây sắp đổ. Tuy nhiên, do nhiều phương tiện qua lại từ 2 hướng nên không thể cảnh báo hết cho những người đang tham gia giao thông.
Cũng theo thông tin từ UBND xã Quảng Bình, anh Nguyễn Quang Thọ là người được người dân thuê đến cưa cây xà cừ. Và việc cưa cây do người dân tự phát làm chứ không phải do chính quyền địa phương tổ chức thực hiện.
Sau khi xảy ra vụ việc, Công an xã Quảng Bình có mặt bảo vệ hiện trường, các phòng nghiệp vụ của Công an tỉnh Thanh Hóa và Viện kiểm sát nhân dân tỉnh Thanh Hóa đã có mặt điều tra, xử lý theo quy định của pháp luật.
