Câu hỏi được nhiều người đặt ra là tại sao Man United lại vẫn chưa có động thái nào liên quan đến việc sửa chữa SVĐ? Theo những thông tin mới nhất từ báo chí Anh, câu trả lời cuối cùng đã có. Theo đó, ban lãnh đạo "Quỷ đỏ" đang lưỡng lự trong việc xây dựng sân vận động mới, hay tu sửa sân Old Trafford.

Theo báo chí Anh, quyết định cuối cùng sẽ được công bố vào ngày thứ Ba (11/3). Tuy nhiên, nguồn tin của TalkSport cho biết kết quả đã sớm được định đoạt, bởi xây SVĐ mới là ý tưởng của tỷ phú Jim Ratcliffe. Theo đó, việc tu sửa sân Old Trafford có thể ngốn tới 1 tỷ bảng, trong khi xây dựng sân mới chỉ tốn gấp đôi, tức khoảng 2 tỷ bảng.

Điểm mấu chốt là kế hoạch xây sân vận động mới của Man United nhận được sự ủng hộ từ Chính phủ Anh, đặc biệt là Bộ trưởng Tài chính Rachel Reeves hồi tháng Giêng vừa qua. Đề án này được thành lập bởi Sir Jim Ratcliffe, cựu thủ quân của MU, Gary Neville, Thị trưởng Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham và lãnh đạo Hội đồng Trafford, Sara Todd.

Dự án này không chỉ xây SVĐ mới cho Man United mà còn bao gồm cả khu liên hợp bao gồm hệ thống nhà ở, khu vui chơi giải trí, khuôn viên giáo dục và thể thao mang tên Trafford Park. Dự án này có thể tạo ra hơn 90.000 cơ hội việc làm cho người dân tại đây và thúc đẩy thêm 7,3 tỷ bảng cho nền kinh tế của Anh.

Theo tờ Athletic, sân vận động mới của Man United sẽ có sức chứa 100.000 chỗ ngồi, tức là sức chứa cao hơn cả SVĐ Wembley. Tỷ phú người Anh tự tin rằng Man United không cần tiền hỗ trợ từ Chính phủ Anh để khởi động dự án, dù đội bóng đang gặp khó khăn về mặt tài chính. Tuy nhiên, Sir Jim Ratcliffe vẫn hy vọng nhận được sự trợ giúp từ ngân sách công để cải thiện cơ sở hạ tầng khu vực xung quanh SVĐ mới.

Trả lời phỏng vấn mới đây, tỷ phú người Anh cho biết: "Chúng tôi chỉ có thể xây dựng một sân vận động mới nếu đó là một phần của chương trình tái phát triển của chính phủ dành cho khu vực phía Nam Manchester. Bởi vì chúng tôi không thể tự mình tái phát triển khu vực này, đó là một hóa đơn quá lớn đối với câu lạc bộ.

Chúng tôi có thể xây dựng một sân vận động. Chúng tôi không cần bất kỳ nguồn tài trợ nào từ chính phủ cho sân vận động đó, nhưng nó phải là nền tảng cho sự tái phát triển".

Tất nhiên, Man United vẫn sẽ sử dụng sân Old Trafford cho tới khi SVĐ mới hoàn thành, dự kiến vào năm 2030.
