Theo thông tin ban đầu, vào thời điểm trên, xe khách loại 24 chỗ BKS 50E - 447.02 do tài xế Trần Thanh Hải (41 tuổi, ở Khánh Hòa) điều khiển theo hướng từ Lâm Đồng đi TP.HCM. Khi đến địa điểm trên, xe khách lao vào lan can lề đường, sau đó xe bốc cháy.

Lúc này, tài xế mở cửa và đưa một số hành khách xuống xe. Tuy nhiên, do ngọn lửa bùng phát quá nhanh, nhiều hành khách phía sau không thể thoát ra ngoài, dẫn đến bị thương và tử vong.
